Stock market research

Sunday Nov 14, 2010

Warren Buffet says, “Never buy an investment that you don’t understand.”

So Instead of depending completely on your financial advisor, try researching a little on your own first.

If you suspect that a certain listed company or fund might work well with your other investments, all you need is internet access to get more information.

Popular websites, like Yahoo or MSN are helpful. Just find the “money” or “finance” section of the site and plug in the name or symbol of the stock or fund you’re interested in.

From there, you can navigate through to learn more.

Read the company report for an overview.

Take a look at the 3- and 12-month returns so you can see what direction it’s been moving in.

The dividend indicates what kind of return to expect if there’s not a lot of market action. And the beta shows how risky the investment is. You generally want a beta of less than 1.

Once you’ve done your homework, you can decide if you still want to ask for your broker’s opinion on the position.

Use Social Networking for Market Research

Saturday Nov 6, 2010

Traditionally, marketers used demographics (compiled by Market Research firms) as one of the main tools to identify and target potential customers. Factors such as a person’s age, sex, and where they live remain important to getting your message across to the right people. However, social networking provides a new opportunity to assess markets in near real-time.

Word of mouth has always been one of the most powerful marketing methods — people more often that not use the products that their friends like and recommend. Social media sites can provide this type of data on numerous products and services. Want to find the best laptop computer? Doing a traditional Google search won’t get you far. Why? Because you won’t get a recommendation, or multiple recommendations. More than likely, you’ll get review sites.

However, do a search on a social networking site, and I guarantee you will find a list of what people think are the best laptops.

Because of the open nature of social networking, you can easily find your customers and see what they do online and who their friends are. Friends of your customers are an excellent target market. In fact, research has shown that people are as much as five times more likely to buy a product if their friends like it.

What is the best way to conduct market research for a computer repair business?

Wednesday Oct 20, 2010

Me and a friend are considering starting our own computer repair business, however we’d like to carry out some Market Research before deciding to invest any money. The only strategy we have thought of so far is to stand in a crowded shopping mall and ask people to complete a survey but we doubt this will be effective.

I would appreciate any suggestions on other types of market research or confirmation that surveying is a good method and also how many people we should survey to make our data credible.

You are right, your approach would not be effective. You can hire a market research firm to do the research and they should provide you with good results. There are many things to consider: the competition, the type of service you offer, the price you plan to charge, the population in the area you can serve, etc.

You would have to decide whether you expect customers to bring their equipment to you or do you go to them to make repairs. Is there a market for computer repairs? Computers become obsolete so fast, and prices have declines so far, that many people simply buy a new computer when their old one breaks down. There is a difference between computer repair and computer servicing. You may do better servicing working computers. This involves setting them up, networking them, installing software, installing additional hardware, etc. Repairing broken computers may not be a good business. A market research firm should be able to find out.

How can I do market research for my wedding planning business?

Sunday Oct 3, 2010

I am in thinking about setting up a wedding planning business but obviously need to do some Market Research first. I’ve tried contacting several venues holding wedding fairs to ask if I could talk to some brides at their events but haven’t got anywhere. I have thought about catching brides coming out of bridal shops but I don’t think these shops would be very happy with this if they found out! Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi

There are so many ways to obtain the information you require, the only issue is what is your budget?

You could arrange small parties like the "Ann Summers" where everyone is relax and not in a rush to go somewhere.

Depending on your budget, you could use research companies.

I wish you all the best with your research and your business.

Kind regards

Al
