Any tips for marketing an online clothing store?
Posted by admin | Under Marketing Online Friday Apr 30, 2010Does anyone have an innovative ideas for marketing an online store? How can I drive significant traffic to my store?
So far I have:
creating a blog
business cards
Business cards is mostly for ‘image’ rather than marketing. It shows that you’re serious about your business.
If you want to market an online store, I suggest you check out how other established online stores do it. The best way is to create a blog that doesn’t just sell your stuff but has quite some number if infos too that you think your target market will be interested at.
Adwords are nice but they can get pretty expensive especially if you’re marketing a newly launched store. I wouldn’t recommend it as your primary marketing tool for now. You can go to several clothing forums and blogs and join as a representative of your blog (meaning your username will be your business name or if they allow signatures, you can put your site banner and link as your signature).
It’s really all about traffic building and making sure that you have good content.
"I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – web traffic is the life blood of any online business. Even if you have the greatest product or website to offer, without traffic your business won’t generate any money."

check out companies who are already at where you’d like to be, ask for tips, take notes on trends other companies create.

This may not be very innovative, but it is a proven method for driving people to your website. Use google adwords. You can open an account for $5.00 and then you get charged each time someone clicks on your ad (usually under $1.00).
I’ve been using keywordspy.com to figure out the best keywords for my ads. Right now it seems like you need to gain some brand awareness, so focus on some more broad keywords so more people see your ads. Later on you can narrow them down to make your campaign better at converting clicks into sales.
Tons of companies use google adwrods, so like I said not very innovative, but very effective. You can probably get a much better ROI on adwords than business cards.

If you want significant traffic, you have to be found in search engines. That takes time. And content. So blogging often and adding products will help there.
Until then, you can attend networking events to promote your business. Check out Meetup.com for interesting groups that would like the kind of clothes you sell. Show up wearing those clothes, and tell them about your store. Also, find other people who really like your products and have them promote your to their contacts or clients. For example, a friend with 500 facebook friends. Or a store owner that sells stuff that you don’t but who’s clients would really like your stuff.
Start an email list of the people you meet who say they are interested. Once a month, email them a coupon, or a sale, or something to get them to check out your site again. Give them a reason to come back. Start making friends using social media and ask them to sign up for your email list too (after you feel like you guys are friendly. Almost nobody likes to meet someone and start getting sold right away, except maybe at business networking events – so don’t do that.)
Adwords can work, but it’ll get expensive if you let it. I’ve seen people spend $5000 in a month and not make a sale. If you go that route, look for a professional to help you optimize your site for sales first.
Hope that helps. Good luck to you.
